Hysteroscopy: Gynae-endoscopy surgeries

Updated: Nov 4, 2024

Everything You Need to Understand

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus (womb). It involves using a hysteroscope—a thin, lighted tube with a camera—that allows your doctor to view the uterine lining and diagnose or treat various conditions without the need for larger surgical incisions.

Why Might You Need a Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is commonly performed for both diagnostic and therapeutic reasons, including:

  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: To investigate the cause of heavy or irregular periods, spotting, or bleeding after menopause.

  • Fibroids or Polyps: To locate and remove non-cancerous growths in the uterus.

  • Infertility: To check for any uterine abnormalities that may be affecting fertility.

  • Recurrent Miscarriages: To identify structural issues in the uterus that may contribute to pregnancy loss.

  • Removal of Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): If an IUD has shifted or embedded itself into the uterine wall.

  • Endometrial Biopsy: To take a sample of the uterine lining for further analysis.

  • Adhesions (Asherman’s Syndrome): To find and remove scar tissue in the uterus that can cause symptoms like irregular periods or infertility.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Hysteroscopy is usually done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. The steps involved include:

  1. Preparation: The doctor may give you local or general anesthesia to minimize discomfort.

  2. Insertion: A speculum is inserted into the vagina, and the hysteroscope is gently passed through the cervix into the uterus. The uterus is then inflated with saline or gas to give a clear view.

  3. Examination: The doctor carefully examines the uterine cavity and, if necessary, performs treatments like removing polyps or fibroids or taking a biopsy.

  4. Completion: After the procedure, the hysteroscope is removed, and you are monitored for a short time before being discharged.

What to Expect After a Hysteroscopy?

Recovery: You may experience mild cramping or light spotting for a few days following the procedure, but this is normal. Most patients can return to their regular activities within 24-48 hours.

Follow-up: Your doctor will discuss any findings and the next steps, if necessary. If a biopsy or tissue removal was performed, results are typically available in a few days.

Risks and Complications

Hysteroscopy is generally safe, but like all medical procedures, it carries some risks. Potential complications include:

  • Infection

  • Uterine perforation (rare)

  • Excessive bleeding

  • Adverse reaction to anesthesia

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Contact your doctor if you experience:

  • Heavy bleeding (more than a normal period)

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Fever or chills

  • Foul-smelling discharge

Conclusion

Hysteroscopy is a valuable tool for diagnosing and treating uterine conditions with minimal discomfort and downtime. If your doctor has recommended a hysteroscopy, rest assured that it is a safe and effective procedure that can help improve your reproductive and overall gynecological health.
